Automatic Gate System

Automatic Gate Systems Essentials

When it comes to security and premises access, automatic gates come in handy. They are most convenient for controlling vehicular access on and off a property. These gate systems have been designed in a way that all vehicles accessing a site have to pass through the automatic gate system. Automatic gates are made of basically two components;

Gate: the physical gate itself which has got to be strong and also matching the adjacent fencing around the premises.  Most gates are made out of chain-link materials or ornamental iron.

The gate opener: this is the bit of machinery that’s responsible for the gates movements. They are electrically powered and use hydraulic, gear driven or chain-driven technology to move the gates.

Types of automatic gate system

There are six types of commonly used automatic gates. Each one has their own merits and weaknesses but each is quite efficient depending on the utility.

Automatic Slide Gates

Sometimes called the “V-tack gates” or “rolling gates”, they are perhaps the most commonly used automatic gate by light duty commercial applications to manage access to the premises. The sliding gate is basically mounted parallel to the fence along the inside wall. This way, sliding back and forth between across the opening is simple and directed. The gate utilizes rollers usually along a metal track and chains to bring about motion. Although it is an inexpensive installation, it can be sometimes blocked by debris, ice or snow.

Cantilever gates

This type of automatic gate closely resembles the slide gates but with a key difference. They don’t use rollers that slide along the ground. Instead, this gate is supported by rails running on the inside of the fence structure. Because of this, the cantilever gate needs to be much wider than the slide gate to accommodate the counterbalance. Since the counterbalance does all the supporting, elements such as friction and obstruction become history. As a result, they are used for heavy duty and industrial applications.

Automatic Swing gates

This type of automatic gate is hinged on one side and then swings open and shut like a door. They usually swing on a 90 degree vector between their open and close positions. These gates can be customized in that you can give the gate multiple leaves for better control. Because of the ease of installation and subsequent low cost, they are a favorite for residential applications.  Given the residential use, they would benefit from safety considerations such as sensors to prevent people being hit or trapped by them.

Bi-folding gates

They are usually referred to as speed gates because of the time it takes to open and close. Consisting of two panels hinged together which fold back onto themselves to give access. When the space is limited, bi-folding gates are an excellent choice. They can also come in handy in places with a lot of vehicular traffic such as school, banks and staff car parks.

Accessories that can be used with automatic gate system

Intercom systems

These are essential to provide guests and delivery drivers a way to communicate with someone on the inside when the gate is shut. Since they allow for remote opening, once the identity of the person is confirmed, they can be let in.

Access control systems

To gain access through an automatic gate system, you need a device that authenticates identity. These include card readers, digital keypads, vehicle tag readers and portable wireless transmitters. In many commercial installments, the same card that gives you access to the building often opens the gates.

Video surveillance

Cameras can be used to monitor things at the gate. Since the footage is normally stored, it can be reviewed later in case there are issues. The system can also be used to verify the identity of someone at the gate and who they might be with thus providing further security at the gate.

Deciding on the type of automatic gate to fit can be problematic at times. Some gates are expensive to install but offer more convenience in terms of usage and accessibility. Although the system is automatic, they still need maintain ace to keep everything running smoothly. That means periodical servicing which entails switching out worn out parts and applying proper lubrication on any moving parts. Not only will automatic gate systems make everything that much simpler, it also provides peace of mind.
